Creating Journal Cards with Ephemera

Hello again! Ona here with a tutorial on making journal cards using Ephemera.

Journal cards are a popular item used in digital scrapbooking these days, I thought it would be fun this week to make some using a variety of ephemera from Rachel's fabulous designs.

Creating a journal card is both easy and creative, ideal for those times when you don't have a lot of time up your sleeve but want to create something quickly. They are ideal to use as an accent on a layout or even printed out with a vintage piece of lace or fabric flower pinned to it and used as a unique gift card.

I created three cards along a similar theme, using a favorite piece of ephemera from Rachel's Artful Intentions collection, She Wears Wings, the little girl with the butterfly stamp along with other old papers and embellishments.

These are the steps I used to create the cards if you would like to follow along (card size is 3" x 4").

Captivated Visions products used for the three Journal Cards:

Captivating (October) 2012 - used paper as background for all three cards - shown as CO12 below.

She Wears Wings Collection - shown below as SWWC

Another Man's Treasure - shown below as AMT

Basic instructions for creating a Journal Card:

Create a template to use -  draw a rectangle shape 3" wide x 4" in height and fill it with black.

Clip layers to your template - as you progress with your journal card you are virtually clipping paper or ephemera (or elements) to the background template.

Save as a PNG file - once you have arranged and clipped your layers you can either merge your layers and save as a PNG (or JPG) file OR use the Stamp Visible function to create a stamped merged layer (see detailed instructions in the Wings Journal Card #1 section below).

Wings Journal card #1 - Flitter Flutter

Working from the bottom template layer up I did the following:

1. Added a background paper #12 (CO12) out of which I cut a piece to clip to the template underneath it.

2. Next I added Stamp 03 (SWWC) and changed the blend mode to Luminosity and lowered the opacity and clipped it to the layer beneath it.

3. On top of this I added the 3 Butterfly png file (SWWC) - again clipping it to the layer beneath it.

4. I chose the Half-doily element (SWWC) and flipped it to a vertical position and clipped it to the layer beneath.

5. Then I added the little girl stamp Ephemera 01 (SWWC) to it and again clipped it to the layer beneath it (I moved the ephemera around until I found a good position for her head).

6. Lastly I added some Wordbit 07 (SWWC) which again was clipped to layer underneath it.

Saving the Journal Card using Stamp Visible:

1. At this stage I created a Stamp Visible layer by going to the top layer and pressing the CTRL+SHIFT+ALT+E key combination.

2. Next I CTRL+Clicked on the merged Journal Card card layer in the Layers Palette to highlight it (place marching ants around it).

3. Then CTRL+X to cut (move) and clicked File>New>Image from Clipboard

4. Saved the new file as a JPG file.

5. This allowed me to go back to my layered file and rearrange my ephemera, elements and stamps to create a new card - I also discarded some items and brought in new ones.

Wings Journal Card #2 - Imperfection

Ephemera tutorial

Basically I used the same steps as outline above, clipping everything to the layer below.

Working from the bottom template layer up I did the following:

1. Add the background paper #12 (CO12)  - HINT: You do not have to use paper, you can easily clip a number of ephemera items to the template to form a background!

2. Next I positioned the ArtsyStamp 03 (SWWC).

3. The ephemera Flower 02 from (AMT) came next.

4. Then I cut up a Wordart 12 strip (AMT) and positioned them.

5. Lastly I clipped the little girl Ephemera 01 (SWWC) to the layer beneath it, tilting it slightly and changing the blend mode to Luminosity.

Wings Journal Card #3 - Makes My Heart Happy

Ephemera tutorial

Basically I used the same steps as outline above, clipping everything to the layer below.

Working from the bottom template layer up I did the following:

1. I used a mixture of stamps (AMT) to blend into background paper #12 (CO12).

2. Then added the butterflies sheet Ephemera 07 (SWWC) and blended that in.

3. Next I clipped the little girl Ephemera 01 (SWWC) to the Piechart ephemera (AMT) first and THEN clipped the Piechart layer to the layer beneath it.

4. Finished it off with the white Stamp 04 (SWWC).
