How to Blend Digital Scrapbooking Templates Together

Hi Everyone!

We are staying with Rachel's Artified series of templates for this tutorial as they are so versatile and lend themselves to mixing and matching wonderfully.

When working with templates remember that you are not restricted to just using the one template, you can easily add other components from other templates.

As well as a range of paper sizes, Rachel also provides a wide range file formats such as PSD, TIF and PNG files. The PNG files are ideal for adding more layers to a current template.

Rachel has created two new Artified templates;

Artified: This Is It and Artified: I See You (see below).

I used the Artified: This Is It template to start my page, and below you will see my finished page.

As you can see my page looks a bit different as I have added several other layers using PNG files from other Artified templates.

So please join me for this template blending tutorial and learn how you can easily and creatively blend several templates together:

Select the template you want to start with, go ahead and add the papers and/or photos or elements to start your page.

I started with photos of Coventry Cathedral in England and went ahead and clipped the same photo to two different masks - one in the large mask on the right, and the other on the left hand side of page - see layout on the left below.

Then I selected a background paper from the You Are Beautiful kit - I loved how the blue stood out on the template circles - see layout below on the right.

Now work with the rest of the template layers.  If you don't need/want a particular layer just turn the visual off for it, but keep the layer in case you decide to use it later - you can always delete the hidden layers when you have finished your layout.

This is what I did with mine, I turned off the grunge, a border and a doodle layer.

My completed page with just the Artified: This Is It template is shown below.

Begin adding other PNG template files to your current layout. At this point I started playing with the PNG files from Rachel's other Artified templates. It is trial and error but it's very creative and fun coming up with different effects. Use papers to clip to PNG layers, or more photos or you can simply recolour them to suit. Simply pick the PNG file you want and move it onto your PSD file and position it accordingly - if it doesn't work for your layout just delete the layer and grab another.

Listed below are the PNG files I used and what I did with them:

Artified: Aim High Template 2 PNG 20 - I recoloured this to white to add some background text to my page. Using a mask I got rid of the darker vertical line on this file.

Artified: Aim High Template 2 PNG 15 - I added paper from the Celeste kit to give some blue grunginess to the top left hand corner of the layout.

Artified: I See You PNG 4 - I clipped the same paper from the Celeste kit to this png file which was an overlay of small circles which I felt complimented the larger background circles. I duplicated this clip and moved it over to the right hand lower corner of the page as well.

Artified: I See You PNG 5 - bit hard to see I liked this scribble and placed on top of the photo frame in the corner and recoloured it to white.

Artified: Aim High Template 4 PNG 15: More circles. I clipped a paper from the Creme Caramel kit to this and positioned it in the top right hand corner.

Artified: In Love PNG 11 - I love these little hearts and just added them to the lower left of the page and put a very fine stroke around them.

Artified: Aim High Template 3 PNG 16 - I thought the top and bottom of the page just needed some definition so I used this grungy layer and recoloured it with a colour taken from the photo.

This is my page to this point.

Finally I finished the page off with a title, using the Lettera 32 font for the main heading and Lainie Day SH for the script text.

Ellen: I moved the placement of the photo in I See You template, so it would line up with the rainbow in my photo.

Loni: I began by layering the largest surface pngs from the templates Artified: I See You and Artified: This Is It. I clipped papers to them, doubled some of them up, and flipped and rotated each layer to create my background.

I then incorporated several of the smaller pngs and filled them with several different paint colors. I played with the opacity and blending modes of each layer before finally moving onto the design/placement of the layered cluster and journaling.

Joanne: This layout began using the Artified: This Is It layered template. Then I added different layers (PNG files) from Arified: In My World Layered Template. I used Collage Strip 1 & 2, clipping the striped paper from My Sanctuary to them & resizing the paper to make the stripes smaller.

Added the large paper or photo maks & clipped the floral paper from My Sanctuary to that. Then the overlay layer was used clipping a paper from the Dream grab bag to that.

Another of the paint layers were used along the side of the layout with the same striped paper from My Sanctuary being clipped to that.

Finally I used the paint 2 layer & clipped a paper from Brokenhearted

Using templates like this is really a great way to create a unique and original layout and it's an easy way of building a page up without having to do a lot of masking.

And don't forget your layer blending modes! Playing around with these will give you more creative effects.

Give it a go and have some fun!

Till next time
